Water-repellent bags VS waterproof bags
Water-repellency, water resistant and waterproof are just a little bit the same in concept, but they are actually not the same level. Many of the customers who visited us during our exhibition show in Canton Fair and Outdoor by ISPO showed pictures of them that they have waterproof bags already, after communication and explaining with our samples and their bags, some customers found that this was not the case, theirs were just water- repellent.
To speed up the distinction and reduce the misunderstanding, we have concluded industry-related details into our following article.
Water repellency is preventing water from entering the bags in light rain or wet weather, while that’s not guaranteed. It can achieve water repellency on stitching bags by spray treatment on surface of fabrics.

However, Waterproof is seamless to make the bag, a waterproof bag won’t allow any water to damp the bag no matter where you are to carry with it. There are different waterproofing levels to achieve bag purposes at different cases, such as the entire bag is against the storm, to put it under waterproof or even dive in the pool, stuffs inside the bag can be protected well from get wet.
To build up a water repellent bag, it’s supposed to be requested adding spray treatment on surface of fabrics, most of fabrics are nylon, poly, cotton or oxford with PU coating. The fabric itself has no resistance to water, but spray on surface will make the water slipped away, durability of the spray treatment isn’t lasting forever, it will be weaker after several times of washing. It means that water repellency will disappear.
Water repellent fabric performs the concept to be against water only, when factory sews the panels together, it is certain that water can access the bag through needle stitching holes like nothing.

The last point is the zipper, normal nylon teeth zipper can’t be against the water at all, although factory try to choose waterproof zipper, when they are sewn together, no protection at all. Fabric does make the water slip away, won’t stay to get the bag wet, but it could be only a marketing slogan to say WATERPROOF instead of water repellency.
